Meet Dai Hazeltine

Hydraulic Service Engineer – Hydraquip Hose & Hydraulics Swansea

I joined the hydraulics industry straight from school at 17 years old and have never looked back! I was always into fixing things with my Dad so when a vacancy arose at Pirtek Swansea I applied. I was very pleased to get the job and started off working in the trade counter for a few years where my knowledge of the industry improved. My role involved booking stock in and out, completing customer’s orders and general warehouse duties.

I then progressed within the company and became a mobile sales & service technician for Pirtek Swansea. I worked on a wide range of different machinery and products including pneumatic cylinders, valve blocks, CAT pipes, power steering hoses and pressure testing. I also worked on lots of tanks, ships and refineries. Some jobs which stand out in my mind are working at Oakwood Park Theme Park, I worked on the ride Bounce where I repaired the hydraulics and pneumatics of the ride. I manufactured and installed some 1.1/2” and 2” air line hoses and hydraulic hose assemblies which operate the lift on the ride. They made the ride go up and down and controlled the hydraulic brake system too. I also repaired the pneumatic piping on the Megafobia ride which controlled the brakes.

I have also worked on a job where I replaced 1/1.2” hydraulic hose assemblies with bsp end connections onto their trailers and tanks. In addition to this I worked on some new build ships in a nearby dock installing the hydraulics of the ships which steered the boats, as well as the gearbox, oil cooler pipes and engine oil pipes.

I worked at Pirtek Swansea for 14 years but then when speaking with Kyle Green who I had worked with at Pirtek and had recently moved to Hydraquip, he asked if I would join the team too so I happily accepted. It is great to be part of a friendly group where we are focusing on a new area for the company. Working at Hydraquip is brilliant, the people are friendly and helpful, and I have a lovely van with modern racking which really helps me when on site.
